Ruolo del microbiota intestinale nel diabete mellito di tipo 2: nuove prospettive terapeutiche

Microbiota and type 2 diabetes: novel therapeutic approaches

Recent evidence suggests that intestinal microbiota may have a role in pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes (T2DM), throughout the modulation of glucose homeostasis, insulin sensitivity, and chronic inflammation. Despite some contradictory results, it has been possible to identify several features associated with T2DM, such as a decreased abundance of butyrate producing bacteria and an overall reduced diversity of the intestinal bacterial population. Thus, the possibility that the microbiota may represent a therapeutic target for the treatment of T2DM opens novel and intriguing scenarios.
