Gestational weight gain in women with obesity: Recommendations and current evidence

Obesity in pregnancy may increase the risk of maternal-fetal complications, and an excessive or insufficient gestational weight gain (GWG) can worsen these adverse pregnancy outcomes.
Current international guidelines recommend a desirable GWG of 5-9 kg for women with obesity. However, these recommendations have limitations, particularly for women with diabetes or severe obesity, in whom recent evidence suggests that lower targets—or even controlled weight loss—may reduce the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes.
