Strategie di targeting farmacologico delle beta-cellule pancreatiche per la terapia del diabete mellito di tipo 2

Pharmacological targeting strategies to pancreatic beta-cells for the therapy of type 2 diabetes mellitus

Targeted drug delivery to pancreatic beta-cells could represent a promising therapeutic option for the treatment of type 2 diabetes (T2D), as it can improve the efficacy of a drug and reduce the required doses and side effects. We will discuss strategies to target pancreatic beta-cells for the treatment of T2D, describing the possibility of inducing drug expression specifically in beta-cells, the available drug carriers, the peptides that can be used for active targeting, and the most suitable routes of administration to direct a drug to beta-cells.
